Biography
Dr Lau Fen Nee has served with the Ministry of Health for almost 30 years. She was the former Head of the Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology at the National Cancer Institute. She received her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Universiti Malaya in 1991. Following that, she attained her Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (Clinical Oncology), United Kingdom, in 1999. She has been registered with the National Specialists Register in Clinical Oncology since 1999.
Her career began in 1991 as House Officer at University Hospital Kuala Lumpur. A year later, she was appointed as a Medical Officer at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Hospital Sultanah Aminah Johor Bahru. In 1995, she assumed the role of Medical Officer at Institute of Radiotherapy and Oncology, Hospital Kuala Lumpur. In 1996, she left for the UK where she was appointed as Visiting Specialist Registrar at the Department of Clinical Oncology, Royal Marsden Hospital. In 1999, she took on the role of Clinical Oncologist at Institute of Radiotherapy and Oncology, Hospital Kuala Lumpur until 2013 when she moved to Institut Kanser Negara as Consultant Clinical Oncologist. She was later promoted to head that department.
Dr Lau was also appointed as the Chairman of the Specialty Subcommittee for Clinical Oncology for the National Specialist Register (NSR) and Chairman of the Parallel Pathway Committee for FRCR (Clinical Oncology) training. She was also the Country Project Leader for Radiation Oncology in the Forum for Nuclear Cooperation in Asia (FNCA) from 2014 to 2021.
Her academic work covers roles as a Lecturer, Supervisor, and Examiner for the Master of Clinical Oncology (MCO) and Lecturer for Master of Medical Physics programs conducted by the University of Malaya. She was also a Lecturer for the Post-basic Oncology Nursing Course (Allied Health Science College) and a Lecturer for the Advanced Diploma in Computed Tomography (ADCT) course for therapy radiographers.
